F.A.Q

What is a self-drive tour?

A self-drive tour is a travel package where you explore your destination independently using a rental car. We provide the full itinerary, accommodation, and support — you enjoy the freedom to travel at your own pace, stop when you like, and experience South Africa on your terms

What’s included in the self-drive package?

Our self-drive tour packages typically include:

  • 4-star accommodation with breakfast

  • Rental vehicle with unlimited mileage and full insurance

  • Entry fees to main attractions (e.g., Table Mountain, Cape Point, Cango Caves)

  • Digital travel guide or app with daily itinerary, maps & recommendations

  • 24/7 emergency travel assistance

✳️ Flights, fuel, tolls, and meals (other than breakfast) are not included unless stated otherwise.

Do I need an international driver’s license?

If your license is in English and uses the Latin alphabet, it is valid in South Africa. Otherwise, we recommend carrying an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) in addition to your home license.

Is it safe to drive in South Africa?

Yes, most major tourist routes such as Cape Town, the Winelands, and the Garden Route are safe and well-maintained. Always practice common sense:

  • Avoid driving at night in rural areas

  • Keep doors locked and valuables out of sight

  • Use GPS or a travel app (we provide suggestions)

Can I customize the itinerary?

Absolutely! All self-drive tours can be tailored to your interests — whether you want more wine tasting, adventure activities, cultural stops, or beach time. Just let us know your preferences.

What type of car is included?

Our standard package includes a Group C vehicle (e.g., Toyota Corolla or similar) with automatic transmission, air-conditioning, and full insurance. You can upgrade to an SUV or luxury car on request.

Are child seats or GPS devices available?

Yes. Child seats and GPS units can be added to your booking at an additional cost. Alternatively, we recommend using your smartphone with Google Maps or Waze.

What are the road conditions like?

Main roads along the Cape Winelands and Garden Route are tarred and in excellent condition. Some scenic detours may involve gravel roads, but these are typically accessible in standard vehicles.

What’s the best time of year for a self-drive tour?
  • Cape Town & Winelands: All Year Round (summer/spring)  Sep- March and Autumn/Winter April - August – ideal for sightseeing and wine tasting

  • Garden Route: Year-round, but best between September and May for sunny weather and outdoor activities

  • Whale watching (Hermanus area): June to November

What if I have a problem on the road?

We provide a 24/7 emergency assistance line to help with breakdowns, directions, or general travel support. In the event of a serious issue, most car rental companies offer roadside assistance and quick vehicle replacement.

Can I do this tour as a solo traveler?

Yes, self-drive tours are available for solo travelers, but a single supplement applies. We also recommend a slightly more compact itinerary if you’re driving alone.

Are meals included?

Breakfast is included daily at your accommodation. Most packages do not include lunch or dinner, allowing you to discover South Africa’s incredible food scene freely. Recommendations are provided in your itinerary guide.
